Astoria, Oregon
"May God bless you, and may your bones bleach in the sands," Captain Lawrence said of the Peter Iredale as his vessel fell prey to a squall in 1906.
The remains of the Peter Iredale now rest on the beaches near Astoria, on Oregon's side of the Mouth of the Columbia.
In the past several months, I've walked out on the South Jetty of the mouth of the Columbia River, which separates the far northwest of Oregon from the far southwest of Washington.
If you walk the entire mile-length of the jetty, you will stand at the edge of the Pacific and the mouth of the Columbia; an incredible view of river and sea, ocean commerce and ocean life.
