Map of Pinacate Desert

Pinacate Map

The Pinacate Desert is named for a type of desert stink beetle.

The Pinacate is so unusual, hot and inhospitable, that NASA astronauts trained here for the Apollo 13 missions.

Conservationists in the U.S. and Mexico are attempting to create a multi-country park by combining the Pinacate Desert with Organ Pipe National Monument and the Cabeza-Prieta Wildlife Refuge in Arizona.
