St. Tammany, the parish which hugs the north shore tip of the giant Louisiana estuary called Lake Pontchartrain, has seen its population nearly double since Hurricane Katrina,. Places like Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge protect native habitat in this quickly developing region.
