Nicaragua ties with Haiti as the Western Hemisphere's poorest country.

Nicaragua is the center country of Central America, and it is also the largest.

Lake Nicaragua, which is called Lago Cocibolca in Nicaragua, is the largest lake in Central America. It is known for its freshwater bull sharks, which were for a long time thought to be a unique freshwater species. In fact, bull sharks frequest freshwater, and are known to have swum upstream the Mississippi as far as St. Louis.

1847. The British invade San Juan del Norte, Nicaragua.
